I am not exactly sure when I slipped into a coffee-driven cycle of addiction, but it happened a while ago. I wasn't even enjoying the taste any more. All I was doing was compulsively making three cups of coffee before the 7.30 school bus which made less time for all the other running around necessary to get the kids out the door, which made for shouty, stressful mornings. The kids were rattled, I was wired and as I'd measure out the coffee into the stovetop basket and tap it down methodically I did not look dissimilar to a junkie shooting up.
I admire those people who can have one cup of coffee a day, or stop eating when they are no longer hungry or just have a sip of wine with dinner. I am not one of them. It's more all or nothing and at the moment there is no coffee in this house. I can't say how long it will last but I do feel much cleaner and more relaxed and the general vibe in the mornings is, dare I say, happy.
So in lieu of coffee, here is a special, satisfying hot drink with no sugar, dairy or coffee. And something about the orange and date makes it feel very grown-up and luxurious.
A clean hot chocolate
1 x 270ml tin of full cream coconut milk
1 x 40g bar of orange and date raw chocolate. (I used this R A W Chocolate made in the Macedon Ranges in Victoria which I love)
1 x tablespoon of honey. (I used this honey made by Tim Malfroy which is exceptional)
a pinch of salt
Melt all the ingredients together in a small saucepan. And add a little water if too rich and pour into tiny mugs. This made three small but very rich hot chocolates.
