An unexpected road trip with Luisa Brimble ("Dude, just come with me, I'll pick you up in an hour") ended up at the beautiful church near the Hawkesbury River a couple of hours out of Sydney that candlemaker Elise Pioch Blazac and her husband Pablo Chappell have converted into a home. I had already fallen in love with this weatherboard church after seeing it in The Design Files and Country Style, but to see it in the flesh, in its non glossy-pages glory was a joy. It is small, understated and utterly charming. No fancy gardens, no designer couches. Just a simple, relaxed, lovely home.
It has got me dreaming about hosting a workshop here, or taking a little holiday (here is the AirBnB link ) on my way down to Sydney next and going all Secret River in a tinnie on the Hawkesbury wearing an Edwardian ruffled dress. And one day I hope to meet Elise and Pablo - what incredible style this pair must have.
